Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne wants to make some changes to the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts program.

He submitted four proposals to the State Board of Education. The first notes that the program will be audited and focuses on ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used only for educational purposes.

The school voucher program has been criticized by public school advocates for a lack of accountability.

In Horne's proposal, he claims: "Here are some examples of what was approved under the prior administration: bounce houses, water slides, above ground pools, kayak, hitch trailer for the kayak, chicken coop, chicken deplucker, freeze dryer, outdoor pizza oven, smoker/grill, baby grand piano, large standing greenhouse, garden shed, firepits, motorized go carts, motorized scooter and large trampolines."

Horne also making some changes to how parents pay their vendors.

Tutors and facilities must also provide proof of their accreditation to the state. Though required by law, Horne said that was not previously enforced.
