The Department of Public Safety is conducting a statewide campaign, aimed at curbing distracted driving. Spokesman Raul Garcia said the goal is to alert motorists to the potential dangers.

“Many violations that occur, such as speeding, unsafe lane usage, failure to yield or stop, are actually a direct result of distracted driving rather than intentional violations," said Garcia.

Garcia said some of the major distractions include the use of cell phones, reaching for things inside the vehicle and adjusting equipment. And, he said discussions with other people in the vehicle can also cause driver distractions.
