Following Monday’s monsoon, St. Mary’s Food Bank’s main warehouse lost power, putting millions of pounds of food in jeopardy.

A few years ago, St. Mary’s Food Bank lost a significant amount of food because of its outdated freezing and cooling systems as well as its inability to hook up to an auxiliary generator.

But through donations, spokesman Jerry Brown said, the entire system was revamped, saving food in the warehouse from spoiling during Monday’s outage.

“We have millions of pounds of food that we need to get out to a whole lot of different agency partners over the next couple of weeks. This would have affected a lot of different partners that we have that distribute food all down the line, and we were able to avert that disaster,” said Brown.

The stored food can last 12 hours in the new refrigerators and freezers without power before going bad.
