Mexican officials are considering whether they’ll accept new aid from the Trump administration to beef up immigration enforcement in their own country, they said.

Mexico’s foreign relations and interior ministry said in a joint statement they were considering an offer that, according to a report first made by the New York Times, would set aside $20 million in aid for Mexico's immigration enforcement.

“The Mexican government will continue to cooperate on immigration issues with the United States, seeking a constructive way of promoting orderly, legal and safe migration,” the joint statement said.

The offer may be symbolic, considering Mexican authorities already spent hundreds of millions every year deporting migrants, said Tony Payan of the Baker Institute, a think tank in Houston.

The vast majority of undocumented migrants in Mexico come from impoverished Central American countries. Mexican authorities have deported about half a million Central American migrants over the last four years.

"I suspect that money is really symbolic, that Washington wants to claim some sort of political victory, and that it wants to announce there is a new partnership with Mexico," Payan said.
