A candidate for Navajo president will have to take a test or be called to testify to prove he’s fluent enough in Navajo to be eligible for the seat, the tribe’s Office of Hearings and Appeals decided Friday.

The Navajo Supreme court will hear arguments Friday about whether a candidate for the office of tribal president should be disqualified.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community recently wrapped up one of its last voter registration drives before the general election. It’s one of several efforts being held around the state to increase Native American voter participation.

The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission said it looks like evidence supports allegations that Attorney General Tom Horne used his staff to do campaign work on state time. The commission is moving ahead with its investigation to find out if Horne violated campaign law.

Many Navajo voters complained that a presidential candidate should not be eligible to run for office because he doesn’t speak Navajo fluently. But the tribe’s election officials have dismissed these grievances.

The latest figures show only about one in four Arizona voters cast a ballot in the primary election.
