Arizona reported just 187 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday. That’s the first time the state's new case count has fallen below 200 since June 1.

4,896 Arizonans have died from COVID-19 and the state has confirmed nearly 200,000 positive cases. Arizona's outbreak has been one of the country's most severe. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports the total share of Arizona's population that has been infected with the virus is third-highest among states.

But by many measures, the state’s outbreak is showing signs of improvement.

Arizona’s case numbers skyrocketed in June. The state reached a record on July 1, reporting more than 4,800 new cases in a single day.

Wednesday’s new case report is the lowest in months. New hospitalizations, ICU bed occupancy and test positivity rates have also all fallen since July.

Public health experts say it’s important to maintain precautions to control the spread of the virus.
