University Of Arizona Continues Mostly Online, Hires Security For COVID-19 Safety Enforcement
The University of Arizona had hoped to begin offering more classes in-person by Labor Day. But the university says it will continue with its current, mostly online model for now.
Dr. Richard Carmona, with the university’s reentry task force, said UA's wastewater testing system has successfully helped prevent COVID-19 outbreaks on campus. But Carmona said student cooperation is critical as the school continues to try to contain the virus.
“Please comply, because for the privilege of being here, you have to help us," Carmona said in a video conference with reporters Tuesday. "You are our greatest strength, but you are our greatest weakness if you don’t comply with these public health best practices."
UA President Dr. Robert Robbins told reporters the university plans to hire private security guards to help enforce safety measures. The school has detected more than 100 positive COVID-19 cases since late July.
