Mesa Public Schools To Finish Fall Semester In Person Despite Calls To Close Last Week

Many school districts around Arizona are returning to remote learning as the numbers of new COVID-19 cases in our state continue to spike. And this week, the largest district in the state, Mesa Public Schools, announced it will join them — but not just yet.
Schools in Mesa will continue in-person classes through the end of the semester with the district closing classrooms on a case-by-case basis. They will start next semester virtually, though, partly because the district won’t have critical data on the spread of the virus during the winter break.
This comes despite the fact that teachers in Mesa are calling for a return to remote learning now.
One week ago, the Mesa Education Association, which represents teachers there, sent a letter to the district calling for just that.
The Show spoke with Mesa Education Association President Joshua Buckley about the reaction from teachers to the district’s latest move.
