Without any evidence of voter fraud, Arizona House committee Republicans approved a bill with the claim it will protect the integrity of elections. 

The measure would ask voters with early ballots to sign an affidavit with their birth date and either their driver’s license or county voter ID number. This would be on top of the signature verification process. 

Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cázares-Kelly said this will significantly slow down the verification process, and cost the county thousands.

“My team has conservatively calculated the additional time it would require for our office to verify the additional requirements listed in SB 1713 and determined it would take an additional 2,500 man hours, which results in a minimum cost of over $35,000," Cázares-Kelly said.

Cázares-Kelly also said these additional precautions are not necessary because the ballot verification process has already been proven secure. 

The bill now heads to the full House.
