Highway Message Board
Arizona Department of Transportation
In 2021, there were more than 2,400 entries that have been narrowed down to 10 finalists.

For the past five years, the Arizona Department of Transportation has held a contest to pick the public’s best safety messages on electronic billboards above state freeways.

ADOT spokesperson Caroline Carpenter says these message boards are important.

“Speeding, aggressive driving, distracted or impaired driving are all leading causes of factors in crashes and fatal crashes. So really this contest is a reminder to drivers of what you can do on the road and actions you can take yourself to be safe," said Carpenter.

She says they have seen everything from wacky to poetic entries. This year there were more than 2,400 entries that have been narrowed down to 10 finalists.

Carpenter says the two winners will be announced in May, and each sign will be displayed for one to two days on the majority of message boards over state highways.

The public can vote for their favorite message until April 21 at azdot.gov/SignContest.
