Temperatures are reaching triple digits, and reports of potential gas shortages have come from around the United States this week.

Through KJZZ's Q&AZ project, a listener asked: Is it safe to keep a full gas can in my trunk during a Phoenix summer?

The short answer is no, according to Bart Graves of the Department of Public Safety. He says the Arizona heat is anything but good for gasoline.

"Gasoline, of course, as we know, is combustible, it’s probably just not a good idea to have a full tank of gas in a very closed-in space, susceptible to heat, as your trunk would be," said Graves.

Graves says the interior of a parked vehicle, especially a closed trunk, can reach about 120-130 degrees during an Arizona summer day.
