The Pima County Board of Supervisors appointed Democratic Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton to fill a vacant seat in the Arizona Senate.

Stahl Hamilton will serve the remainder of former Sen. Kirsten Engel’s term, through 2022. Engel resigned to run for Congress.

By appointing Stahl Hamilton, the supervisors created another vacancy in the House, and more work for themselves before the next legislative session begins in January. Party leaders in Legislative District 10 will nominate three Democratic candidates to serve in the House, and the board will appoint one of three as the district’s newest representative.

Four other vacancies must also be filled in Maricopa and Pinal counties amid a period of midterm upheaval at the Arizona Capitol.
