Sean Astin is in Arizona to screen 'The Goonies' and promote running for mental health

Younger fans of "Stranger Things" are probably familiar with actor Sean Astin from his portrayal of Bob Newby, Radio Shack manager and boyfriend of Winona Ryder’s character. Older fans recall his turn as a hobbit in the "Lord of the Rings" series or as the underdog of the "Fighting Irish" in Rudy.
But Gen Xers remember Astin from his career defining role as Mikey in 1985’s "The Goonies" — the film that follows a group of young teens as they hunt down pirate treasure in order to save their community from being bulldozed by the evil developer. It can’t be called a cult film — it has transcended generations and appeals to a wide spectrum of viewers.
Astin will be hosting a screening of "The Goonies" in Chandler Dec. 3. But before that, The Show spoke with him to learn about why this slapstick kids' adventure has such a dedicated fanbase 35 years later:
Astin is also in the Valley this weekend to run — not from the Fratelli Brothers, but to raise awareness of childhood mental health and wellness — through running. The Chandler-based RUN3rd Alliance is a global social media campaign to combine the mental and physical benefits of running as well as connect youths and people around the world.
The screening kicks off a weekend that includes a 5K fun run, a golf tournament and a panel discussion with Astin addressing childhood mental health.
