As COVID cases continue to climb, Sonoran teachers finally eligible for booster shots

Teachers in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, are getting COVID-19 booster shots this week. Officials hope it’s a step toward bringing more students back to classrooms.
On Wednesday, the first booster shots were administered to Sonoran teachers — most of whom were initially vaccinated with the one-dose CanSino shot last May.
Now, about 65,000 teachers are set to receive a dose of the Moderna vaccine as a booster this week.
Gov. Alfonso Durazo attended a vaccination site Wednesday morning, calling it another step toward a safe return to normal in schools.
Schools opened for in-person classes this semester on Jan. 3. However, attendance has been low as COVID-19 cases are spiking in the state and across the country.
On Tuesday, both Sonoran and federal health officials reported all-time high daily case counts, 998 and 33,626 respectively.
