The Arizona Senate unanimously passed a measure that would let lawmakers keep addresses and other personal information from public view. 

The bill counteracts what supporters say are increasing threats to public officials.

Arizona law shields some personal information for certain government employees like judges and police officers. This bill would extend the same protections to public officials, including current legislators.

One issue pointed out by the bill’s Republican sponsor is that state lawmakers are required to live within their districts, and with this bill, constituents or challengers would not be able to verify those claims.

If approved, public officials would also not have to disclose a reason for restricting  access to certain information, as long as they believe a person’s life or safety is at risk.

The measure now moves to the House for consideration.
