Hate crimes have gone up across the board in the United States.

According to a recent analysis from the Marshall Project, hate crimes that were reported to the FBI went up from more than 8,000 in 2020 to nearly 11,000 in 2021. The rise was the sharpest for Asian American and Pacific Islanders and LGBTQ people.

Hate against Asian Americans has been up since the start of the pandemic in America, but it hasn’t gone down as the pandemic has eased.

To find out why, The Show talked to Karen Leong, Arizona State University associate professor of Asian Pacific American studies, and women and gender studies.
