Phoenix earmarks $3.5 million for trees and shade canopy programs
For the second time in a year, Phoenix is earmarking millions in federal funds to add trees and shade canopies to neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
In June 2022, Phoenix set aside $6 million to add trees and shade to neighborhoods and schools in qualifying census tracts – that typically means lower income areas. On May 31, 2023, the City Council approved another $3.5 million for two new grant programs.
The Community Canopy Grant Program will provide trees and supplies to nonprofits, neighborhood groups and community members. The Shade for Students Grant Program will provide funding or shade structures to public school districts, after-school or summer program nonprofits, and youth community centers.
Applications will be accepted through the city’s Office of Heat Response and Mitigation. The money will come from Phoenix's allocation of the American Rescue Plan Act and must be spent by the end of 2024.
