Phoenix is leaving the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority
The city of Phoenix announced Friday that it will wrap up its partnership with the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.
The city will step away from contributing funding and other resources to the operation of the airport in the southeast Valley. Phoenix's departure is set for June 30, 2024.
The authority, which owns and operates the airport, also includes Mesa, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Gilbert and the Gila River Indian Community.
A statement from Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport explained that after more than 17 years, the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is succeeding, growing, and no longer needs Phoenix’s support.
“Given the Phoenix-Mesa Airport Authority’s strength and financial solvency, as well as Phoenix’s need to continue making financial investments in its own system of airports, now is the right time to conclude participation on the PMGAA Board,” said Phoenix Councilman Jim Waring, who also serves as the current vice chair of the authority's board.
The city is pulling out, it says, to focus on investing in its own system of airports.
