Animals at the Phoenix Zoo also face the challenge of this summer's excessive heat. And officials there have taken action to ensure the lions, tigers, bears and other creatures remain cool.

Drew Foster is in charge of animal care at the zoo.

"They are provided with shade obviously, misters obviously. We access them to climate-controlled buildings, give them swamp coolers or air conditioning in many cases," he said.

Foster said guests are coming earlier in the day due to the excessive heat. The zoo has scaled their hours back to 7 to 11 a.m.
