The owner of the Arizona Coyotes plans to buy land in Mesa. The move has led to speculation that the team could look to use the property to build a new arena in the East Valley city.
This follows the defeat of a proposal for the Coyotes to build an arena as part of a new entertainment district in Tempe. Voters in the city rejected that idea in a May election.
For now, the team is playing in Mullett Arena on ASU’s Tempe campus, but there have been rumors since the arena deal was defeated that the NHL may be looking to move the Coyotes out of Arizona. Team officials have said they intend to keep the team in the Valley.
