Tempe gives free home energy kits to select low-income households
Nearly 50 families in Tempe have received free energy kits as part of a pilot program to help people lower their power bills.
Tempe’s Sustainability and Resilience Office distributed home energy kits that included utility stipends, LED bulbs and smart plugs, which let you automate and control appliances from fans and refrigerators to air conditioners.
The city chose 48 households from three neighborhoods based on income, poverty rates, high heat vulnerability and median land surface temperatures. The neighborhoods are: Victory Acres, Escalante and Alegre.
Tempe said the pilot project is part of larger work across other areas of the city.
This fall, Tempe will hold community meetings and create a Climate Justice Advisory Group to focus on long-term planning around energy equity and heat relief. The city said the feedback from the workshops “will inform the city on the types of programs, policies and infrastructure it needs.”
