When leaders in cities, like our own, talk about homelessness in their communities, you often hear the phrase “we don’t want to be like Los Angeles.”

LA has become a cautionary tale when it comes to its ballooning unhoused population, which outpaces just about anywhere else in the country. However, what the blame is and how officials should address the problem are still up for debate.

LA Times reporter Noah Bierman set out to find some answers — or at least some ideas. He went around the country to other communities that face similar problems, from poverty to drug addiction to crime rates, but don't have the same problem with homelessness, to find out: What’s the difference?

The Show spoke with him more to find out.
