2 Arizona professors awarded MacArthur 'genius grant' for 2023

This month, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced its slate of 2023 fellows.

While the foundation discourages calling it the “genius grant” these days, the 20 recipients this year are certainly an impressive bunch who are doing fascinating things. 

The Show spent some time with two 2023 recipients from Arizona.

Manuel Muñoz is a writer and University of Arizona professor has published four volumes in his career. They're most often collections of short stories with one thing in common: They’re nearly always set in California’s Central Valley and the rural farming communities where he grew up. 

The Show talked to him about his work.

Arizona State University anthropologist Amber Wutich is a President’s Professor and studies water insecurity and its impact on mental health.

She came by the KJZZ studio to talk about her work.
