Flagstaff votes next week on controversial plan for new hospital

A plan to relocate the Flagstaff Medical Center will be decided by the city’s voters on Tuesday, Nov. 7. The referendum could clear the way for a new, larger facility to be built on the outskirts of the city.

But opponents say the move is unnecessary.

The current medical center sits near downtown Flagstaff, and is Arizona’s only level one trauma center north of the Valley.

Northern Arizona Healthcare says renovation is not feasible because the facility cannot be expanded to accommodate the area’s growing population and meet current medical standards.

Opponents of the new facility are concerned about the extra distance from downtown Flagstaff, a potential rise in health care costs, and the possible abandonment of the current building.
