A longtime voice of Phoenix radio has died, his family announced Saturday afternoon.

Super Snake died unexpectedly early Saturday. He was 61. His family did not release further details about his death.

He became well known in the 1990s as a DJ on Power 92, a Phoenix hip-hop music station which was then on the 92.3 frequency.

Snake, who didn’t reveal his real name publicly, also worked at stations in Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco and New York, according to a statement released Saturday. Most recently, Snake was on air at Hot 97.5/103.9. He was scheduled to host a New Year's Eve event in Scottsdale on Sunday.

“We are devastated by this unexpected loss. Snake had the ability to make you feel like he was everyone’s best friend because he was larger than life. We will continue to honor Snake’s legacy and ask for privacy at this time. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with support," his family said in a statement.
