A Mohave County official is asking a judge to allow the hand counting of ballots, saying there is nothing in state law preventing a county from doing so.

In a Maricopa County Superior Court filing, an attorney for Supervisor Ron Gould argues the Election Code says ballots “may be cast, recorded and counted” by vote counting machines.

Gould says his constituents are losing faith in elections.

"It doesn't matter why they're losing faith in the election. My concern is that they'll quit voting if they lose faith," Gould said. 

The push for hand counts has increased following unproven narratives of election interference. Attorney General Kris Mayes sent Mohave County supervisors a letter in November saying a hand count was illegal.
