Mesa, Cochise County, San Carlos Apache Reservation are getting new electric car chargers
Mesa will be installing electric car chargers in eight new locations across the city. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Mesa more than $11 million for car charging stations. The city’s grant is the majority of the $13 million awarded to the state.
Cochise County and the San Carlos Apache Reservation will receive more than a million dollars for new chargers.
The money comes under the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure grant program, created in 2021, which allotted $2.5 billion for electric charging stations and similar technology across the country.
Mesa will be focused on creating 48 car charging ports and 10 e-bike ports, each equipped with solar-shading.
U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton, who announced the grant on Jan. 8, said the award will have a positive economic and environmental impact.
"Arizona is already a nationwide hub for EV manufacturing. Now, thanks to these funds from our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we're helping communities like Mesa bring their EV charging networks online," Stanton said. "It'll mean convenience for drivers, lower emissions and even more good-paying clean energy jobs."
The award comes as part of the Biden administration’s goal of installing 500,000 public chargers across the U.S. by 2030.
