After seeing over a 5% increase in passengers, welcoming nearly 2 million travelers in 2023, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is wrapping up construction of two major improvement projects with the intention of increasing capacity and efficiency.

A permanent 30,000-square-foot terminal will replace the current 10,000-square-foot temporary concourse, which includes five new gates. The new terminal will also include a tech lounge, restaurants and shops.

A new enclosed walkway will connect the ticketing kiosks with the security checkpoint, which currently requires walking from one side of the airport to the other. Both the new terminal and the walkway are projected to open in February, according to airport officials.

The updates come as a result of a $14 million federal grant that was given to the Mesa airport in 2022 under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

These changes are coming just in time for Allegiant Air’s plans to add more flights to and from Mesa. The airline saw a major reduction in its flight schedule in summer 2023, citing labor shortages in the aviation industry as the main reason for the reduction. Several routes in Mesa were affected at the time, according to Allegiant.

The airport is also looking to add inaugural daily flights at the Mesa airport.
