Hobbs, GOP Arizona lawmakers at odds over state land trust withdrawals for education funding
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has said she wants to increase the rate money is taken from state trust lands in order to boost teacher pay and funding for other education needs.
That, however, would require an amendment to the state’s Constitution, which must be approved by voters.
Chris Kotterman, with the Arizona School Boards Association, told PBS’s “Arizona Horizon” that Republican lawmakers want the withdrawal rate to stay the same.
"But clearly there will have to be some horse trading or negotiation on this because Republicans are here, governor is here, and we have to get to a place where we can get something on the ballot. And if it’s all one party or the other, it’s not going to go well," Kotterman said.
Kotterman said the last time funds were changed, it required congressional approval, as well.
