A project to enhance safety by adding bike lanes and sidewalks along a 5-mile stretch of Main Street (Apache Trail) in east Mesa is starting in early February 2024.

Main Street in east Mesa is getting a $38.5 million upgrade from the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The project, called U.S. 60X, will include various improvements to the 5-mile stretch between Sossaman Road in Mesa and Meridian Road in Apache Junction.

The project will add new sidewalks, improved lighting and upgraded driveways to ease access to local businesses.

ADOT is responsible for the road due to its old designation as U.S. 60. Once the upgrade is complete, Maricopa County will take ownership of the road.

Construction began this week and is projected to take two years to complete.  Most of the work is expected to take place on weekdays, with one lane open in each direction. Business access will not be affected.
