Amkor to build $2 billion semiconductor testing campus in Peoria
The Peoria City Council has paved the way for the nation’s largest semiconductor packaging and test facility to be built in the city.
Amkor Technology plans to build a campus on 56 acres just off Loop 303 in Five North at Vistancia, mixed-use living and employment center.
Over 10 years, the company says it will invest $2 billion and add about 2,000 local jobs. The agreement calls for construction to begin by September 2025 with at least 550 full time workers by September 2029.
Amkor tests and packages semiconductors for companies like TSMC, a microchip manufacturer building plants in northwest Phoenix. Both projects are counting on financial support from the federal government as part of an effort to boost U.S. competitiveness innovation and national security in the semiconductor industry.
Amkor said it worked closely with Apple on the Peoria facility’s manufacturing capability, which will package and test chips produced for Apply at the TSMC fab.
In a statement, Giel Rutten, Amkor’s president and chief executive officer, said, “Amkor’s new facility in Peoria represents a pivotal milestone in advancing semiconductor manufacturing within the United States. We are excited and proud to help spearhead the development of a robust American semiconductor ecosystem here in the heart of the Silicon Desert.”
According to the city, the public infrastructure associated with the project will be constructed and reimbursed by a three-way agreement with Vistancia Development LLC, Amkor and Peoria, with the city reimbursing up to $3 million toward the cost.
