The Arizona Board of Regents recently chose an interim executive director to serve while his predecessor is on temporary assignment at the University of Arizona.

The appointment came with a yearly raise of $45,000.

Gov. Katie Hobbs had told the board that its executive director should not also hold the chief financial officer job at UA, which is in a financial crisis.

So the board appointed a new director, Chad Sampson. His base salary has gone up to $258,000 a year. It is about 31% less than what his predecessor in the role, John Arnold, would make.

A spokesperson says the board does not plan to fill Sampson’s previous position of vice president while he is on temporary reassignment. Sampson’s previous responsibilities have been given to others.
