The Phoenix Union High School District is stepping up efforts to educate its students in financial literacy.

On Thursday, April 4, the district’s governing board adopted a resolution recognizing April as Financial Literacy Month. The resolution also establishes the board’s support for programs and activities related to financial literacy.

Phoenix Union piloted a program at Camelback High School this year where more than 100 students had the chance to earn a dual enrollment credit through Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business.

“Students tackle topics such as budgeting, taxes, debt management, retirement, insurance and more," governing board member Aaron Marquez said. “Making sure that our students are prepared to enter life after high school is super important. Then they can also manage the financial impacts of getting a job and paying bills and being able to afford living in our great state of Arizona.”

The cost of those courses was covered by the ASU Foundation. Marquez said the district hopes to expand the program to more schools in the future.

"I think this is a start to recognize this as an important topic that all of our high school students should be learning or have the opportunity to learn before they graduate," Marquez said.
