Gates on alleys, culverts are coming to more Phoenix neighborhoods
In November, 2023, the Phoenix City Council approved an extra $2 million to install more gates at alleys and washes. Neighborhood Services Director Spencer Self says they received 165 applications and will fund 157.
“To select the alleys we worked with the police, public works street transportation and fire departments, as well as the Office of Homeless Solutions to create a list of known alleys with reported issues of illegal dumping, encampments blocking solid waste collection access and other activity related to blight and crime,” he said.
By the end of June, nearly 60 alley segments with more than 150 gates should be installed, along with about 25 culverts, which are meant to channel storm water but sometimes attract homeless encampments.
The city launched a gated alley pilot project in December 2018 in the Royal Palm neighborhood along 15th Avenue in north central Phoenix after a man jumped a wall and exposed himself to children.
