Gov. Doug Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman on Sunday ordered a statewide closure of schools through at least March 27 as authorities rush to contain the outbreak of the new coronavirus. The leaders said they'll work with health officials to decide whether schools should remain closed longer.

The Arizona Education Association is encouraging all students in Arizona to stay home from school until Gov. Doug Ducey presents a plan to curb the spread of the coronavirus and ensure safe schools.

Pima Unified School District in Graham County in southeastern Arizona said on Friday evening that an elementary school employee has presumptively tested positive for the coronavirus. An estimated 166 students are believed to have come in contact with her, said superintendent Sean Rickert.

The Alhambra Elementary School District announced Thursday afternoon that it’s closing all of its schools starting Monday until further notice in response to the global coronavirus outbreak. One Phoenix mother has two childcare choices: hire an expensive sitter or take time off work. She said both will hurt her finances.

Despite the governor’s decision for schools to remain open, four large school districts in metro Phoenix announced late Thursday that they would shut down because of the new coronavirus. Widespread shutdowns were not necessary at this point because there isn't a broad spread of the virus, said Jessica Rigler, assistant director at the state Department of Health Services.

Back in January, the School of Architecture at Taliesin and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation decided to close the Scottsdale school. But the board for the School of Architecture at Taliesin has voted to keep the doors open. The board made its decision last week after reportedly securing other sources of funding.

Following reports of three new possible coronavirus cases in Arizona, Gov. Doug Ducey has declared a statewide public health emergency. The declaration frees up tools to help combat the spread of the coronavirus. The Department of Health Services, led by state health Director Cara Christ, will now coordinate the state’s ongoing response. And state officials now have access to $500,000 in emergency funds.
