Arizona's health department will launch another mass vaccination site next week on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson. It will be the first state-run COVID-19 vaccine site in Pima County.

There are dozens of locations administering vaccines in the state, but about 20% of all shots given in Arizona have been at the state health department’s two mass vaccination sites at State Farm Stadium and Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The University of Arizona campus will serve as the third large-scale vaccination site operated by the state. The site will eventually have the capacity to operate 24 hours a day and administer 6,000 shots daily, according to a press release. 

The university has been administering vaccines for about two weeks, but the new partnership with the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Pima County Health Department will allow the university to expand its vaccination efforts.  

For now, appointments will be available to adults 65 and older, educators, health care workers and other prioritized populations. Registration for appointments opens Tuesday at 9 a.m. at podvaccine.azdhs.gov. The state has not announced how many appointments it will make available. 

“Demand for the vaccine remains high, and the state’s third vaccination site and first in Southern Arizona will help meet that demand,” said Department of Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ in the press release. “We’ll have the ability to vaccinate more people each day at this site once we have more vaccine doses."
