Karl Eller, well-known Arizona businessman and the namesake of the University of Arizona's business school, died at his Phoenix home on Saturday. He was 90.

Patricia Castro, the wife of former Arizona Gov. Raul Castro, died on Saturday. She passed away at the age of 94 due to kidney disease. Her husband died in 2015 at the age of 98. He served from 1975 to 1977 as Arizona governor.

Arizona and the nation has lost one of its most towering and influential political figures. Sen. John McCain, who had been battling brain cancer for more than a year, has died at age 81. He was a war hero, a statesman and an Arizona original.

Former University of Arizona baseball coach Jerry Kindall has died.

Terri Cruz, a founding member of Chicanos Por La Causa, the largest Hispanic nonprofit in the country, has died. She was 89. Cruz has a long history as a community advocate and activist.

A longtime Valley civic leader known for his work with community organizations has passed away. Pete Garcia was the CEO of Chicanos por La Causa for 25 years. Garcia is credited with developing many of the organization’s programs that now serve nearly 200,000 people in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.

This week, it was made public that one of Arizona’s more prominent arts philanthropists had died. Gary Herberger passed away at the age of 79. He was an architect who had trained under Frank Lloyd Wright. And his family has famously given to institutions around the Valley and state.

Arizona historian and author Jack August has died at age 63. He was known for his work on water policy, but especially on the history of the West.

The big-winning rider was born in Tucson and went on to win almost 4,000 races. Gomez battled substance abuse throughout his career and retired from racing last year.
