Due to warm and dry weather conditions and the increasing risk of fire, Grand Canyon National Park is implementing new fire restrictions, according to a U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service release.

Crews are wrapping up operations on the Telegraph Fire, which burned more than 180,000 acres east of Phoenix.

A spokesperson for the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office on Friday said the Spur Fire, which charred 150 acres in Bagdad and left 24 homes damaged or destroyed, was not the result of negligence.

The McDonald Tank Fire in eastern Arizona is now 31% contained after growing to more than 3,500 acres last week. The fire has shown no significant growth as of Sunday morning, holding at fewer than 3,600 acres.

As Memorial Day approaches, five of the state’s six national forests are already under fire restrictions. Coronado National Forest became the sixth forest to impose fire restrictions to offset dry conditions.

The Tussock Fire has burned more than 5,000 acres southwest of Crown King. Although the blaze has presented a number of challenges, firefighters have reached 15% containment.

Efforts to prevent a catastrophic fire season on the other side of the state have officials imposing new restrictions on Friday.

Firefighters continue to battle the Bonito Rock Fire on the Fort Apache Reservation in eastern Arizona. They got some relief when a storm dropped 3 to 6 inches of snow in the area.

The light rain that fell in the Valley earlier this week was a refreshing change and a brief respite from the drought that has gripped the area for years. And any precipitation can help lessen the chances for destructive wildfires. But the fact remains that the wildfire season is expanding as we get drier and the impact of climate change grows.
