As of Tuesday, the Navajo Nation has reported a total of over 22,500 cases and 781 deaths since the pandemic began.

Tribal President Jonathan Nez says those 75 and older, as well as teachers, will be among the next eligible group to get the vaccine. Nez plans to set the example by getting the vaccine during Thursday’s virtual town hall meeting.

“From the first batch, or the first delivery of Pfizer, we were able to give shots to 4,700 and more health care professionals," Nez said.

Nez also says high risk patients over 65 will have access to the vaccine starting Jan. 11.

The Navajo Nation will remain under a shelter-in-place order until then. Nez says the weekend lockdowns and safety protocols have worked to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Thursday's virtual town hall will be at 10 a.m. and hosted on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page and YouTube channel.
