Tempe wants to update anti-discrimination ordinance to protect housing voucher recipients

Tempe is holding a public meeting at noon Monday to talk about updating its anti-discrimination ordinance.
The city proposes adding protections for those with housing choice vouchers that would make it illegal to discriminate based on someone’s source of income.
Councilmember Randy Keating says other Arizona cities are also changing their policy, and Tempe should follow suit.
"Possibly 30% to 40% of our housing choice voucher participants tell us that it’s increasingly difficult to secure housing in Tempe," Keating said.
He says this also will allow those who receive disability insurance or veterans benefits to claim it as income.
The meeting will be live streamed for those who register, and people may send feedback on Tempe’s website.
