In 2024, every sworn-in Phoenix police officer will undergo a two day training to learn the new use-of-force policy that is expected to be implemented in the new year.

Over the last year, the Phoenix Police Department has been taking input and suggestions from not only the community, but also the U.S. Department of Justice on how it can update its use-of-force policy

Sgt. Phil Krynsky says the new policy drafted will not be implemented until every officer has been trained.

“You know nearly 2,600 sworn officers so it is going to take some time. Again we are definitely anticipating that this will be taken care of before the end of 2024, but hopefully sooner than that," Krynsky said.

Notable changes in policy include clarity in several core principle definitions. For instance, employees will avoid intentional escalations.
