Planned Parenthood Arizona has announced a change in leadership. The organization’s new CEO will take the helm amid ongoing legal and political fights over the state’s abortion laws.

Planned Parenthood Arizona is the state’s largest abortion provider and the organization’s advocacy branch is a major political force in the state. The organization has been without a chief executive since its previous CEO, Brittany Fonteno, left to take a position with a national reproductive rights group in July.

In the nearly seven months since, a campaign launched to get an abortion rights measure onto Arizona ballots, and the Arizona Supreme Court heard arguments over whether the state should enforce a near-total abortion ban. Planned Parenthood Arizona is a party in that case. The justices have not yet announced a decision.

Angela Florez has now been appointed to lead the organization’s health care and advocacy efforts. Florez has previously served on Planned Parenthood Arizona's board of directors and has worked for a number of other Arizona nonprofits including the Women's Foundation for the State of Arizona.
